Sutton Coldfield MP and Shadow Minister for Birmingham, Andrew Mitchell, today added his support to the campaign launched by the family of Cerys Edwards. Andrew has added his name to the petition which calls for a review on legislation concerning sentencing and the power of cars that inexperienced drivers are allowed to use. Andrew previously raised the issue on behalf of the Edwards family with the Government.
Andrew Mitchell, Shadow Minister for Birmingham, said, “I am pleased to support this campaign by Gareth and Tracy Edwards and hope that it will highlight the need to look again at dangerous driving laws. I hope that with the support of the Birmingham Mail and its readers that the Government will think again.”
“I wrote to the Ministry of Justice on behalf of the family to ask that legislation on sentencing for dangerous driving is reconsidered. I also contacted the Department of Transport asking for a review of the regulations governing new drivers and the vehicles they are permitted to drive. Sadly the Department of Justice replied that the Government has no plans to increase the penalty for dangerous driving. I will be writing to my colleague, the Shadow Justice Secretary, to urge him to look into the possibility of a Conservative government reviewing this legislation.”
