Robin Walker, Parliamentary Candidate for Worcester, today welcomed the No vote in the Irish referendum that could scupper the Lisbon Treaty. He said it was the second time in a week that the government had needed help from across the Irish Sea after they used Northern Irish votes to railroad their 42 day detention bill through the commons yesterday and he expressed his hopes that the government would now learn not to ignore people’s views on Europe.

The Irish government, unlike the government in the UK, kept its promise to hold a vote on the proposed European Constitution and the people of Ireland have had their say and have said no to the project. This means that Europe’s leaders will have to go back to the drawing board on a treaty that was widely believed to be a repeat of the constitution rejected by voters in France and Holland. Voters in the UK were deprived of their chance to have their say when Labour backtracked on their manifesto promise to hold a referendum.

Robin said

“It should never have been left to Irish voters to save us from this unnecessary and unjust treaty but we should all be grateful that they have. For the unwanted project of a European Constitution I can only hope that this is the death knell. It has now been rejected by voters across different countries and at different times. Politicians across Europe should learn the lesson that they cannot force change upon us without listening to the people.”

“This is the second time this week that the government has been rescued by help from across the Irish Sea. They needed deals with Northern Irish MPs to force their vote on 42 day detention through the commons and overcome a rebellion by their own MPs. Now they have been saved from the ignominy of passing into law a bad treaty on which they had promised that people would have their say, then broken their promise.”

“I am proud to be British and I believe in Britain as a sovereign nation. I believe it is time that our government listened to the overwhelming view of the people, not just in Britain but in Europe more widely, that this should be the case. For too long European convergence has been a pet project of politicians that is out of step with the wishes of the people they claim to represent.”
